The Exceptional Teaching Assistant Programme is open to teaching assistants with a drive and passion to develop and improve their practice and will be delivered by local outstanding practitioners and senior teachers from Rutland Teaching Schools Alliance. Based upon the most recent research, it will give teaching assistants opportunities to reflect on both their own practice and their own role within the whole school approach to teaching and learning within their own organisations.

The Exceptional Teaching Assistant Programme aims to maximise the impact of teaching assistants by developing a set of skills and strategies that enable them to reflect upon and develop their practice and so make the biggest difference to pupil achievement.

A key finding from current research suggests

'The typical deployment and use of TAs under every day conditions, is not leading to improvements in academic outcomes.'(DISS project (Deployment and Impact of support staff 2003 - 2008), EDTA(Effective deployment of teaching assistants and MAST (Making a statement 2010-2013).

However, evidence from the Education Endowment Foundation has shown that when TAs are well-deployed, trained and supported, they can make a noticeable and positive impact on learning outcomes.

The programme will run over 3 sessions. It is delivered through face-to-face taught sessions and classroom learning walks within local primary schools.

The core aims of the programme are to:

  • Explore the role of TA as facilitator of learning.
  • Deepen understanding of key aspects of outstanding teaching and learning
  • Allow time to consider the impact of different strategies and pedagogy and so become a more reflective and flexible practitioner
  • Develop a clear understanding of the power of independent learning and what that can look like in the classroom
  • Develop a common language to discuss teaching and learning

Course Leaders Karen Muir, Director Primary for the Rutland Teaching Alliance

I am an enthusiastic and successful key stage 1 and key stage 2 practitioner with over 16 years of experience. I am currently Director Primary for the Rutland Teaching Alliance which involves planning, writing and delivering high quality CPD for Rutland's schools. I love the challenge of working collaboratively across schools to produce high quality learning outcomes for children with a wide range of needs. I studied at Homerton College (BEd) and completed an MEd at Leeds University specializing in early writing development. I have been a senior teacher, successfully led a range of curriculum development and am currently lead practitioner for the Rutland Learning Trust (MAT) in Rutland. I strongly believe that all curriculum and learning initiatives need to start and end with the children and their learning. I also think that sometimes we need to be brave and try something new!

Sally Gooding, Deputy Head of Empingham Primary School, Rutland

I have been lucky enough to have taught in Primary Schools, for nearly twenty years. For the last nine, these have been spent in middle and senior leadership positions across a two school federation. This has enabled me to lead in collaboration across schools, where making a difference to the learning that children have access to, has been both effective and rewarding. This has included a range of curriculum development and school improvement initiatives. Having professional development - with learning at the heart, is where I think the greatest differences can be made. Having had a valued opportunity to collaborate with the RTA this year, has compounded my ideals and has led to some rewarding opportunities to extend this across many schools.

Total Cost for 3 sessions -

PLP members: £200 per delegate (£100 per delegate per session)

Non PLP members: £300 per delegate (£150 per delegate per session)

Places limited to 15 per session

Venue: To be confirmed (all three dates will take place in Peterborough).
