This session will consider different enquiry based approaches to RE in the primary setting and how these can be used in the classroom. The Agreed Syllabus and the ‘Understanding Christianity’ resources take an enquiry based approach to teaching RE. It has been shown that enquiry approaches help children for the following reasons;

• The children develop a much deeper understanding of RE – going beyond simply learning facts for handling ideas and questions more effectively.

• Much more sustained learning is achieved rather than the fragmented pattern of work often seen in RE. Children are able to follow through their enquiries, building on their thinking across a number of sessions.

• Children become more confident as learners; discussion is no longer teacher-led.
